Minoxidil is a well-established treatment for androgenetic alopecia—commonly known as male or female pattern hair loss. It works mainly by stimulating hair growth through mechanisms such as increasing blood flow and nutrient supply to hair follicles, reversing miniaturization, and encouraging dormant follicles to enter the growth phase. The medicine extends the active growth (anagen) phase and helps produce thicker, longer hair. Its effectiveness depends on individual scalp enzyme activity, as minoxidil must be metabolized to its active form locally to exert its benefit. Stopping minoxidil therapy may lead to gradual hair loss again.
