Eltrombopag is an oral medication used for increasing platelet counts in people with specific blood disorders, such as chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenia (ITP) that has not responded well to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy. It is also prescribed to boost platelets in adults with thrombocytopenia due to chronic hepatitis C when low platelets prevent treatment with interferon-based therapies, and is a recognized treatment for severe aplastic anemia, sometimes in combination with immunosuppressive therapy. Eltrombopag works by mimicking the action of thrombopoietin and stimulates bone marrow cells to produce more platelets, helping to reduce bleeding risks in these conditions.
